The day before tomorrow

I sit here in disbelief that tomorrow is Ryane's first birthday. A year ago today was the last full day I would be carrying this baby, unsure about so many things.  How would the surgery go?  Was it a boy or a girl?  How would he or she fit into our family?  Was it a boy or a girl? How will the boys handle a new baby in the house? WAS IT A BOY OR A GIRL?

I hate surprises.  I think I even hate when people say the word surprise.  I like to know.  I don't want to be shocked... and yet, this was one surprise that I needed in my life.  Don't get me wrong, it was not easy to not find out.  Every single day I wanted to know.  And every single day I felt a little bad that I didn't find out because I felt like we got to know Kaden and Cam while they were in my belly.  We knew their names and we associated their movements with their personalities.  We didn't do that this time and part of me felt like we lost 5 months of time getting to know her. But not finding out was the best surprise of my life.

I have a few favorite moments from the day Ryane was born, and it started with just her and me, alone in the dark, sipping a cup of coffee.  Even though I wasn't scheduled to have her until 1:30, I set my alarm for 5:00 a.m.  I calculated when the last moment was I would be allowed to eat or drink anything and made myself coffee (without coffee I was afraid I'd get a headache and feel a bit out of it).  I took the cup into my bed, put my hand on my belly and just felt her move.  I don't know if we will have another baby and I wanted to make sure that I cherished this time.  Just us.

No one will ever know the strength of my love for you.
After all, you're the only one who knows what my heart sounds like from the inside.

Another moment that stands out in my head is watching the world around me go about their daily life while I was among them but felt like an outsider looking in.  I don't know if I described that well.  But because my surgery was scheduled so late in the day, I took the boys to school, I sat at Starbucks, I got a pedicure and went to a bakery to pick up cupcakes.  I was there, going through the motions, but my mind was somewhere else.

I waited my whole pregnancy to feel like I would be okay with a boy or a girl.  I said I would be but I didn't know if I really believed myself.  On the way to the hospital, and I can picture exactly where on Central Expressway I was, I realized that no matter what this baby was, I was good as long as the surgery went well and he or she was healthy.  Nothing else at the point mattered and I just wanted us to be okay.

I still giggle thinking about when we checked in at the hospital.  We got all our paperwork done quickly and there was hardly anyone else there.  The woman said, "Okay, now you can go back to the pre-op room, B as in boy."  I looked at Nic with this "oh no she didn't" look.  He looked me dead in the eyes and said, "Maybe she meant, B as in it's going to B a girl."  Ha!  He was and is always there for me.  His support means everything.

During the surgery, I was a wreck.  I wasn't thinking about the baby.  I could feel my heart beating.  I could feel the blood pressure changes.  WHOEVER LEFT THE MONITOR SITTING RIGHT NEXT TO MY EYES- THANKS FOR NOTHING!  I remember Nic's nervous laugh when the doctor asked him to stand up and take a guess what the gender was based on her face.  "She has girl parts" is still talked about often.  I'll never forget that I was unable to speak.  I could hardly open my mouth to whisper.

The doctor held her up and I thought... "Oh, wow.  She's so fat!"  She wasn't cute!  She was so smushed up and swollen.  She pooped down the doctor's gown within the first few seconds of her holding her up.  I felt really bad about that!

But seriously, she's already got rolls!

Nic went to take pictures as they weighed her.  I remember worrying that something was wrong.  She wasn't crying and I called out for Nic who so sweetly and calmly told me she was perfect.

You got your girl.  That's what people have said to me all year. Even when people would just simply ask how many kids I have and I'd say two boys and a girl.  You got your girl.

I got my girl.

She's been the best and it's been a great year.  Recently a friend told me that looks-wise, she is the missing link between Kaden and Cam.  Nic and I agree that is true, but on a much deeper level.  She is the missing link in our family.  She is the calm during the storm.  She makes Kaden and Cam better brothers.  She makes me a better mom.  She is loved more that I thought I could love and adored beyond words.

One more interesting thing about her birth is something that I just found out when I looked at pictures of the day she was born.  When Kaden was born, I was hopeful he would be born on 3/8/08 (which he was) because my birthday is 8/3/80.  I liked how the numbers mimicked each other.  He was born at 8:03 and before they turned the scale to pounds, he was 3380 grams.  Cam was born at 8 pounds, 3 ounces.  I found this picture the other day and couldn't believe I didn't know this:

How did I never know this?  3800 grams!

I love looking back on this day.  It doesn't seem like it was that long ago that I was able to hold her in my arms for the first time.
I love this picture. I love this beautiful feeling.

I'm going to go enjoy my last day of having an under 1 year old :)  Happy birthday week!

Cam-isms

Cam is quite funny; however, I'm not
sure if he means to be! Here are a few funny things he has said lately:

"Soup and poop! That rhymes!"

"Remember when we were at somebody's house and the baby had cake on her face?"

"Remember when we went to a campfire and my marshmallow had fire on it and grandpa blowed it out?"

Cam asked if he could have a granola bar and I told him no because it was almost dinner and he has had a lot if snacks today. He said he didn't have a snack so I named popcorn, pizza and sno cones (we were at a food festival). He said "a sno cone isn't a snack!" I asked him what it is and he yelled "a sno cone is a vegetable!"

Halloween

The boys put their costumes on as soon as Kaden got home from school.  Kaden had asked to be an astronaut since about last Halloween!  He didn't wear his helmet trick or treating, but it is pretty darn cool.  Cam changed his mind a lot about what he wanted to be.  Mostly he said pirate.  Then about three weeks ago he decided to be Woody and actually stuck with it (until the day before Halloween and the little funny boy said he wanted to be Buzz...)  We actually had a Woody costume so I bought Cam some new cowboy boots and a cowboy hat.  About 2 minutes before we headed outside, I lined up the kids to take their picture... and NO COWBOY HAT.  I searched the house for about ten minutes and gave up.  I put an old cowboy hat on him for a picture and we rushed out the door.

And Ryane... Cutest. Piggy. Ever. Right?!?

Nic took the boys out trick or treating.  Ryane was crabby and actually said "ni ni" while we were at the neighborhood party (she is either getting teeth or has a little cold).  He said Cam was always two houses ahead of Kaden and had to tell him to slow down and wait.  When they got close to home, Nic told the boys it was time to go home.  Kaden said okay and Cam said he wanted to keep going!

They had a blast and were so proud of their bags full of candy!

And that piggy.  Can't get enough!

11 months

I'm trying not to freak out.

11 months.

How can it be that 11 months have flown by so fast? It's making me crazy!  I have loved every baby stage with my girl, and especially right now when Ryane is talking, playing games and being so sweet. But I will always miss and cherish the new baby stage.  It hardly seems like 11 months ago that she was born.  She has been a light for me and she has truly made a difference in my life each day.

Ryane wears size 4 diaper. I just bought all 12-18 month clothes for the fall. I thought there was no way the 18 month pjs would fit, but they fit perfectly.

Ryane takes 2 naps a day at around 9 or 9:30 and again at 1:30 or 2. She generally sleeps 1.5 hours. The other day I thought to myself, "Ryane really is in a good napping routine."  Then she started taking a shorter afternoon nap.  I need to un-jinx myself.

She goes to bed around 6:30-7 and sleeps for about 11-12 hours. She is still waking up to eat around 4. Sigh.

After Ryane goes down, if there is a loud, screeching scream, she's thrown Lucy overboard.

Ryane loves picking Cam up from school.  She stops to look at the "ssh" and people make a pretty big deal over her.  She eats it up.

Ryane has a few new words:
*hi
*bye bye
*more

When asked, Ryane tells you what a lion says (rrrrr), what a cat says (oww) and what a dog says (fuuf)

Ryane waves hi and bye and she claps when she's dancing or when she hears a song.

She signs all done pretty consistently and says "ah da." She can sign more but prefers to scream until  you get her another bite.

She is still so freaking LOUD!

Ryane has 6 teeth!  4 on top, 2 on the bottom.  That's a lot of teeth in a short period of time, in case you are keeping track.

Ryane
*crawls always on her hands and knees
*pulls herself to standing on anything
*cruises along and between furniture
*goes from standing to kneeling and back up easily
*can climb the stairs quickly (we now have the gate back up)
*will NOT attempt to stand unassisted (neither did her brothers)

Many times when Ryane wakes during the night, she finds Lucy and goes back to sleep

Ryane adores her big brothers.  She plays a lot with Cam.  They crawl around together and play at the kitchen together.

Ryane just started eating solid (pureed) foods twice a day.  She still is choking on solid foods and because I have an irrational choking fear, I haven't pushed this.  But I need to... she's almost 1.

Ryane still puts EVERYTHING in her mouth and loves to chew on paper.  Lately she's gotten better about spitting it out....

Ryane loves to crawl into the bathroom and unravel the toilet paper.

Ryane has gotten better about not crying when I leave the room.  Since she has been exploring more, she is okay with me leaving.  Of course, I can't leave for more than a few seconds because she's into everything!
Ryane still belly laughs when blocks fall over and make a crashing noise.
Ryane still lies her head on my chest.  Best. Feeling. Ever.
Ryane LOVES when Nic comes home from work.  She crawls fast into the kitchen and makes an excited grunting noise.  When she sees him she gets a huge smile and starts laughing.

She hates when I leave!  The other day I walked Kaden to school and Nic took a video of her standing at the door crying.  So sad (but so cute)!

Ryane just got her first pair of shoes!  Big girl!

Love you more than you know, my sweet 11 month old!

8 years

Happy eight years!

I couldn't ask for a more loving, caring and supportive husband. He just gets me. He knows I'm nuts but loves me anyway. And I adore him.

"Just when it feels like I can't make it through, it sure is nice to just be the woman with you."
