I'll trade ya...

...one chomper (a.k.a. pacifier) for one new, red, shiny bike!!

When Kaden turned one, Nic and I said it's time to give up the chompers...

Then he turned 1 1/2... and 2.... Now he's over 2 and we are ready!

For the longest time, I'm not even sure how long but quite possibly over a year, Kaden has only been allowed to have his chompers in his crib. As soon as he is ready to get up for the morning or from a nap, he throws his chomper down and asks to get out of bed. But with him approaching 2 1/2, we thought that it's definitely time to get rid of them.

A couple of months ago, a friend mentioned the "trade" while we were playing at the park. I thought it was brilliant and that it just might work! We've been talking to him about the trade... some days he seemed okay with it and some days he was not about to give them up. We talked up the bike for awhile as well, just to get him good and excited about it. We even looked them up online and let him choose which one he wanted. He picked out the Huffy Disney Cars bike and even wanted a matching helmet! We ordered it online and it arrived Friday during nap time. Nic went to get him up from his nap and told him his bike had arrived. He brought all 4 chompers down stairs and placed them immediately in a bag (I cried... don't ask!). He was a little shy with the bike at first, could be because he had just woken up, but then was completely excited! No mention of chompers...

...Till bed time. He screamed my name and threw the biggest fit I have ever seen when he walked over to his crib and saw they weren't in there. I tried explaining but there was no reasoning with him at that point. I just had to walk out of the room. By the time I got to the last step, he has stopped crying. He slept the whole night without a tear! When he got up he told Nic the trash truck came to pick up his chompers.

We are on day 3 and things are going well. He has woken up from a couple of naps crying, but has gone back to sleep. He has gotten upset right before bed time a couple of times, but I think he's accepted that there are no more chompers.

I'm still a bit sad. I felt like I took away something that calmed him down and helped him to sleep. But I know it was the right thing to do and that his dentist will thank me for it someday! :)

Looking Back

Kaden is at camp this morning and I had the opportunity to just sit and rock Cam... something that I didn't get to do often with Kaden. Kaden was a much different baby than Cam! It's hard not to compare the two, even though I know I should try not to. I never said Kaden had colic... and I'm still not sure he did. But he just cried, and cried, and cried. He cried from the minute he woke up in the morning until the minute he went to sleep, starting at about 3 or 4 weeks old. Everyone told me it will get better at 12 weeks, "just wait till he's 12 weeks..." Well I waited. He turned 12 weeks and he was still crying. He turned 4 months and he was still crying. At 5 months old, something clicked and he became a happy little boy! Don't get me wrong, Kaden was never and will never be easy! He is high maintenance to a tee. He is as stubborn as can be and he's the most shy little boy I've ever met. But if I really sit and think about it (actually, I don't need to think that hard), he's me. I joke with Nic about it... I'm not quite sure how my wonderful husband puts up with 2 of us! However difficult those 5 months were, I wouldn't trade a second of them for a second with an easy baby. I feel like having a demanding baby meant that we sat with Kaden more, played with him more, and taught him more than we would have if he was easy. I feel like he learned to explore and communicate so quickly because of the attention he received. I fear that Cam will be "the second child" and it truly scares me because I never want him to feel that he is second in my eyes. I feel guilty when Kaden is demanding my attention and I have to put Cam on hold for a few minutes to help Kaden. But I feel guilty the other way around, too. Cam is not an easy baby either, but in comparison, Cam takes the cake. He went through a difficult few weeks where I think we were sleep-depriving him in order for him to sleep better at night. He was overly tired and cranky for a few weeks. He's now on the Babywise schedule of eat, play, sleep. Some days it works, some days it doesn't, but he's definitely a happier baby when he's awake. I can make him smile more than anyone (Kaden smiled mostly at Daddy... and shiny things like metal picture frames!) and that makes my heart melt. Cam is content to be held and likes when you "move it move it" and bounce, sway or rock him. At Kaden's 2 month appointment I remember the nurse asking me milestone questions, one of which was "does he calm down when you pick him up?" I knew what the answer SHOULD be... but the truth was... only sometimes. At Cam's appointment when the same questions was asked, undoubtedly the answer was yes. Cam's definitely a snuggle bug. He loves to be held along your forearm on his belly when no other position is working. He still loves to look around, especially looking up at what's high on the wall or a shelf. He started going in his jumparoo and seems to enjoy hanging out upright. His feet touch the floor already! We put Kaden in the jumparoo at the same age with 2 coffee table books stacked under him (and Kaden was never small by any means!)

I couldn't ask for a better big brother to Cam than Kaden. He loves that little boy so much, and Cam is going to grow up to be his biggest fan. Kaden loves to hug and kiss him and to lay next to him on the floor. He recently started teaching and explaining things to Cam which is unbelievable to me. We have a little caterpillar toy and on it is a knob with a dog, cat and duck. Kaden was teaching him which animal is which! And when they lay next to each other, Kaden points and things in the room and tells him what they are. Kaden is the most hilarious person I've met (well... maybe under the age of 25... Uncle Eric is pretty funny too) and he knows it. He has the most wonderful sense of humor and knows just how to crack me up. He has a great Australian accent: "big red cah" and has perfect timing in his jokes. Last night I was cleaning up after dinner, and when I finished I walked into the office to see what he was doing. He was sitting at the desk, keyboard tray out and hand on the mouse. When asked what he was doing he replied, "checkin' email!" I hope he knows how much I love him.

I truly truly cherish these boys; through all the struggles we've had and through all the laughter, my boys are everything to me (you're included in one of my boys too, Nic) :)

I love you all so so much.

2 months old!

Cam is 2 months old! It's hard to believe, and the last 2 months have flown by. He had his 2 month check up yesterday and here are his stats:
Length: 25 inches
Weight: 14 pounds, 6 ounces
95th percentile for both!

I don't actually remember his head circumference but it's still in the 5th percentile. I think it'd be off the charts if they measured cheek to cheek :)

Cam is really starting to notice things around him. He loves to arch his back and look up at whatever is around. I caught him staring at the little birdie that goes around in circles on his swing the other day, and he watched it for quite awhile! Cam is a pretty smiley little guy and you can make him smile by just smiling at him! Sleep is very important to him... which we learned the hard way. But when he gets a good amount of sleep during his naps, he's a pretty calm and happy boy. He is starting to coo "ahhooh" and kick his feet when he's excited. I talked to the doctor yesterday about how he's still only going 4-5 hours between feedings at night. Apparently, since he's growing at such a fast rate, his metabolism is going crazy and he gets hungry pretty quickly. Hopefully (for my own sanity) he will start to tolerate more time between feedings at night. I'm tired!!

Happy 2 months baby boy! I love you!

Omaha

Nic, Kaden, Cam and I took a week and a half long road trip up to Kansas City and Omaha. We were lucky to be surrounded by amazing family and friends and had a wonderful time!! We stayed pretty busy while in Omaha- here are some pictures of our trip to the Children's Museum, the zoo, the pool and hanging out with grandparents and great-grandparents.

This was the most fun part... balls everywhere!

Don't let the smiles fool ya... he was in tears as soon as the merry-go-round started... And then said "again" when we were finished.

Brave boy

Here's a video of Kaden jumping in the pool at my grandparents' house! I think it's quite impressive how quickly he warmed up to the pool this year!
